20.07.2010 - Pendle Vale Community Panel Meeting

On the 20th July 2010 we held a special community panel meeting for the students at Pendle Vale College. The idea was to decide how to spend their participatory budgeting. The group discovered what the project was about by playing 'Top Trumps' - sounds funny i know, but the idea was to select a picture of a job role and score it by looking at whether they need to go to university, its a physical job, paid well or not etc. The young people and parents also interviewed role model, Attique, and created road maps, for example looking at different paths of life and how they may affect us positively and negatively.

At the end the group had a debate on how they would like to spend the money - it had to relate to Inspiring Communities. They decided to do several activities relating to jobs, road maps, and extra curricular activity and film the process so they can show other students in Pendle Vale that we can reach our potential!

Community Panel

Hello everyone!

The Community Panel meeting for July took place on Wednesday. It was well attended by young people, parents and grandparents.
Events included ...
  • an interactive activity with one of our role models, we looked at positive and negative things that we could each relate to personally and talked about them

Discovered jobs in journalism with Sarah who has been a journalist for london newspapers including the Sun, Mirror, Sunday Sport - she has worked with Daniella Westbrooke and other celebrities.

After having cakes and drinks we had an interactive workshop where we could get advice on being a healthy teenager and eating healthy foods as well as exercising regularly. As well as this we got the opportunity to look at the affects of drink driving - we put some special goggles on that changed our vision, we then had to play with a remote control and avoid obstacles - this was very difficult! We looked at lungs and discovered how smoking can affect our bodies and much much more ...

For parents, Tackling unemployment were to hand to provide information on getting back to work.
Take a look at our photos...
A big thanks to all the agencies that attended to help make the event a success!

Celebration Event

Students from Primet High School have just completed a 10 week street-dancing programme.

On Friday the 9th July, we celebrated the girls' commitment, enthusiasm and achievement in taking part in this extra curricular activity!

To do this we went to Carlo's Italian Restaurant, had a 3 course meal and spoke about what events we would like to do next.

Some comments...

"I really enjoyed the streetdancing and hope to get involved with something like this again" Girl, 12

"I love everything I have done and I would like to say thankyou. And I have enjoyed myself sooo much" Girl, 13

We will be doing this again towards the end of the year, if you would like to get involved in activities like this, get in touch!

Operation StaySafe Art Workshop at Primet High School

Operation Staysafe is a project in Pendle where agencies regularly come together to protect vulnerable young people from hazards such as alcohol, drugs and other potentially harmful situations. Targeted Police patrols take place at peak times to identify vulnerable young people and take them to a place of safety.

StaySafe have asked young people to design posters to promote the StaySafe project. Last week, police officers spoke in the school assemblies at Primet High School about the project to help give young people an idea of what the project is about.

Today, a group of young people took part in a Staysafe Art Workshop where they designed posters to enter the StaySafe competition with the hope of winning a mountain bike!

The young people spoke about what could happen if they got into drugs and alcohol and how this could affect their lives.

Take a look at the pictures!

Here the young people decorated face masks to show their interpretation of who Operation Staysafe may target.

If you wish to take part in the StaySafe Workshop tomorrow, we will be in the Oracle (Primet High School) at 12:25 till 1 - this is open to Primet Students only.

Dance Festival

As I have previously blogged ... a group of girls involved in the IC project have taken part in a 10 week streetdancing programme provided by Pendle Leisure Trust. On Saturday the girls took part in the Dance Festival at Colne Municipal Hall and presented their dance to the audience. Thankyou for all the support from parents and representatives from the school, especially Gemma Beveridge!

*Celebration Event*
This Friday Primet Learning Mentor, Gemma Beveridge, and myself will be taking the girls to Carlo's Italian Restaurant in Colne to celebrate their enthusiasm, effort and achievement.

Well done girls!

Role Model Training

The first session to induct and prepare our fantastic role models took place on Wednesday 30th June, below is a comment from Lancashire adult learning trainer, Leslie,

"I have just had the pleasure of delivering a training session to 7 Role Models at the ACE Centre, Nelson. It was a joy to meet everyone and to hear everyone's stories. The session was to help in preparing for presentations at Community Panels etc. Some felt anxious, nervous, apprehensive about this, but by the end of the evening all felt happy, excited and enthusiastic to share their experiences. We put together a plan/guide for the presentation and also increased awareness of setting personal boundaries and a code of behaviour for role models. We also enjoyed a great buffet! Requests for further training were noted (communication skills, listening skills etc). I look forward to meeting more Role Models soon on the next sessions".
