Hairdressing at Nelson & Colne College

Yesterday we took a family to look at Nelson & Colne College.
In particular we focused in on the Hairdressing and Beauty departments.
We also had a look at the Art Department, Refectory, Sports Hall, and Learning Resource Centre.
The family were very excited about the tour and after looking round the college, one young person is now seriously considering taking the hairdressing course.

U Choose rehersal

The first rehersal of the theatre performance got under way yesterday in Manchester. Feeling Good theatre led by Emma Bramley stared to pull together work on the first stage of the storytelling workshop for Pendle Vale College and Primet High school. Informed by research and help from the young people and parents of the community panel, this will help a new group of young people explore their hopes and aspiration which will be documented through the use of prezi.com as a digital road map with artist Beth Barlow. Emma said. "Great day, we have created something I think is fun but really direct so hopefully makes them think! We may not fill the whole two hours but we will have to play it by ear and we have added in lots of opp for them to make notes which will hopefully be a great starting point for the prezi stuff!"

Burnley College is so Cool!

This half term Inspiring Communities families are visiting local FE/HE Centres.

This afternoon Burnley College opened it's doors to Inspiring Communities.

Charlotte from the college's Student Services took a family round the state of the art new campus.
We looked round areas including: Science, Tourism, Construction, Sports, Art, Drama, and Media Studies.
Each area have their own specialist Active Learning Zones, rather than having one big library for the whole campus.
Highlights of the tour included the UEFA standard, full sized outdoor 3G pitch, and the film studio.
One young man on the tour remarked "Burnley College is so Cool!"
Further tours of colleges are booked in for this week, so if you want to get involved let us know on 01282 868743.

Jen in creative mode...

Jen is having a really creative day today, busy designing and creating a large book of all our achievements and activity to take to the Parenting Information Day in Bradley and the Alcohol Awareness event at Primet High School this week.

I have to say I have never seen anyone so serious about cutting out! Warren also has been busy helping out too.

The final results will be here on the blog when it is finished... if we can prise it off Jen first!
(It's actually REALLY good - thanks to both Jen and Warren!!!)

On Saturday 09th October Inspiring Communities visited Myerscough Higher Education College. It was yet another great event with a full coach of parents and young people enjoying a tour of the Preston Campus.
Peter Cotterill and David White from the Schools Centre at Myerscough took the group on a tour of the various areas of study offered there which included Horticulture, Animal Studies, Equine, Land Based Mechanisation, and various outdoor sports (including Golf, Rugby and Football). Everyone was very impressed by the range of courses available at Myerscough. The group also saw tractors, farm machinery, a dog obedience show event and the gymnasium in sports centre.
Some of the highlights of the trip included; feeding Shetland Ponies, the reptile house, tropical fish tanks, various types of birds, rodents ] and a pot-bellied pig!
The campus also has large gardens and a garden centre, where it sells plants that are grown there to members of the public. There is also an orchard and the young people tried to spot as many different fruit plants as possible.
The visit was a great success and broke down a number of preconceived ideas of what a university is like. Claire Grimshaw, Inspiring Communities Coordinator said:
“The trip to Myerscough was a really good way of letting parents and young people see a different kind of Further/Higher Education College – lots of the courses and activities are based around outdoor or physical activity and they even have things like Diploma’s in Rugby, Golf and Football!”
A big thank you to all the young people and parents who attended and a special mention to David and Peter who really went out of the way to make the day a fantastic experience! Anyone interested in coming along to another activity or event should contact Jen or Warren on 01282 868743.
